Learning with Millie and Suzie
While talking to little ones about the topic of racism can be hard, it is an imperative step towards ultimately ending hate and discrimination. Medical students and authors Samantha Harris and Devon Scott created a book series called Learning with Millie and Suzie to help children learn about different kinds of doctors and the human body. The main characters are two African American sisters. The authors hope the books serve as conversation starters for families and stated, "We want to show little black and brown kids and all kids around the world that they can be anything they want to be.” So far, they have 3 books in their series, which are described below. All 3 books have ebook versions, which are free to download from their website.
Why We Stay Home
Suzie is really excited to be able to stay home with her Mommy, Daddy, and older sister Millie! When Suzie expresses this to Millie, she explains to Suzie why they have been staying home with a quick lesson on Coronavirus.
Millie’s arms have been really itchy lately...but this is nothing a trip to her dermatologist, Dr. Stewart, can’t solve. Join Millie and Suzie as they learn about their skin, the job of a dermatologist and why their skin is beautiful.
What Happens When You Break A Bone?
Millie and Suzie are having so much fun riding their bikes in their driveway! That is until Suzie has an accident and falls off her bike. Suzie starts to cry because she is very scared that she might have broken a bone. Daddy comes to her rescue and also provides a quick lesson on bones, muscles, and what he does as an Orthopedic Surgeon.
